Mt Batur, Kintamani

#1 of 44 in Nature in Bali
Trek up Mt Batur, an active volcano situated among impressive natural scenery. Head to its crater on a guided tour, or travel independently--the walk up isn't particularly difficult, even to fairly inexperienced hikers. Set within the much larger crater of a volcano that erupted thousands of years ago, the site offers views from the top that include a crescent-shaped lake and volcanic scenery hemmed in by high crater walls. • I can only join the positive reviews. The view from the Batur Sunrise is simply breathtaking. But now, while the Agung erupts, many tourists avoid the North, thereby Kintamani not belongs to the evacuation zone. The guides tell me about Facebook for days by little customers.  Who is now in Bali, has the unique opportunity to experience the Batur almost deserted! If I could, I would be immediately.  The climb is strenuous but even my completely untrained girlfriend and our teenage daughters have arrived up and were very proud of themselves. No matter whether you book the guide through a trekking Agency, or about the status of the Guide Association - necessarily ask for BUDi! He is one of the most experienced guides on the Batur. BUDi has gone with us not only an alternative route outside the mainstream, but took great care to us. Because he speaks great English, he could tell us much about culture, religion and nature. He has even managed to motivate a girl through much patience and encouragement, and to inspire the other girls by some action when iterating down. So it was a formative and exciting experience for us all. (You would do by the way something good him because he has a family, he feeds on the trekking-job earnings. This is difficult even in the high season. The current situation brings him (and other guides with family) really in an emergency. I think right now they are very thankful about tip!) If you meet BUDi, a beautiful greeting from me ordering him ;-)

  • We where a group of 7 who went along with 2 guides ( you are not allowed to trek without a guide ) for the sunrise trek. Started at 4.10 reached the summit just in time for the sunrise at about 6 am. Magnificent views followed by volcano steamed egg and sandwiches for breakfast. Do ensure you start early at around 3 am if you are not used to hiking as it gets moderately difficult during the end.
  • We came here for the sunrise tour and it was absolutely stunning. Be prepared for a steep and stony journey up to the top but once you get up there just enjoy the show. We've had a cloudless morning and a crystal clear view. The only downside is the hundreds of other tourists climbing up there at the same time. It feels very touristy. During the ascent we were sweating but at the top it was quite chilly so make sure to pack a warm jacket and maybe even a beanie. The descent took much longer than the ascent.
  • Amazing View from the Top! Took almost 2 and half hours to climb, but the sunrise experience after the trek was made it worth climbing the mountain. Really enjoyed it!
  • Great trek to the top of a mountain. Did the sunrise tour which was well worth it as we really appreciated the cooler weather going up. We are both fit 20-somethings and did not struggle at all with the climb. It is largely loose volcanic rock and Ash closer to the top which can be quite slippery - especially if it has rained recently. Unfortunately we didn't get to see anything at the top as it was extremely misty but we still had a great time. Pack a warm jumper as people are not exaggerating when they say it's cold on top. Wpild recommended a visit if in the area. Jump on a cheap group tour which will include a guide and breakfast. It is quite busy with tourists on top so don't be surprised by that. We didn't find it a problem though.
  • Joined the sunrise trek with some friends. Took us about 2 hours to get to the top, and it was totally worth it! The view is stunning at sunrise, but it was also lovely in the pre-dawn when you could see the stars so clearly.

Where to stay in Kintamani

As most visitors choose to stay in other parts of Bali and make day trips to Kintimani, you won't find a huge range of accommodations in the area. Options consist mainly of small guesthouses and bungalows, with only a handful of hotels. Because of their proximity to the start of the trail up Mount Batur, the villages of Toya Bungkah and Kedisan--on the shores of Lake Batur--have the best range of places to stay.
