St. Stephen's Church, Ooty (Udhagamandalam)

4.5
#1 of 10 in Historic Sites in Ooty (Udhagamandalam)
Enjoy the tranquility and a piece of mind just above downtown Ooty at St. Stephen's Church, a cream-colored cardboard caste-like Anglican colonial establishment. Built in 1829 exclusively for the British, the church features huge wooden beams hauled from a defeated sultan’s palace 120 km (74.5 mi) away. Slim pointed arch windows with stained glass have images of Virgin Mary, Last Supper, crucifixion and angels. The church has no traditional bell but uses four hammers instead moved by wires pulled from the floor. An overgrown cemetery behind the church features graves of many scions of British families, soldiers, administrators and traders. Church doors open on Sundays and during holidays alone. The Architecture is amazing especially when you climb the stairs and go up you feel the entire warmth . The church dates back to the 19th century. Stephen Rumbold Lushington, the then Governor of Madras, who keenly felt the need for a church in Ooty exclusively for the British, laid the foundation for the church on April 23, 1829, to coincide with the birthday of King George IV. St. Stephen's Church was consecrated by John Matthias Turner, Bishop of Calcutta, on November 5, 1830. It was opened to the public communion on Easter Sunday April 3, 1831. It came under the Church of South India in 1947.[3] The architect incharge was John James Underwood, Captain, Madras Regiment.
