Gateway of India, Mumbai

4.2
#1 of 585 in Museums in India
Watching over the Arabian Sea, Gateway of India stands as perhaps the city's most recognizable symbol. The imposing gate, which reaches a height of 26 m (85 ft), reminds visitors of the grand architectural legacy the British colonial empire left behind. Note that the basalt gate fuses several different architectural styles, including Roman triumphal features and local Hindu and Muslim aspects. You can wander through the gate to view the domed ceiling and see the inscription above the arch, dedicated to the visit of King George V and Queen Mary in 1911. • During a visit to Mumbai, the gate of India is a must-see. In the evening, the gate is worth a visit. This is certainly the most visited tourist attraction in Mumbai and is run over accordingly. Some cruises departing from the gate of India.

  • This place is of immense historical importance. Also a bucket list item of Mumbai tourists. A great photo opportunity with an amazing backdrop of The Tajmahal Palace and Towers. Don't miss the boat ride opportunity if you love to be in the open waters.
  • A nice place to chill with friends and family. It's rather a touristy place but Mumbai residents come here to chill as well. It has a very beautiful view of the sea and a place where you should definitely come if you're visiting Mumbai or already live in Mumbai! 😊
  • Great experience.. The board ride is highly recommended from my side. It was so much fun and thrilling. Plus cleanliness is good and the view of the sea makes you feel like heaven. 😊
  • Well known historical palace. A must watch for anyone vising Mumbai. The structure itself is magnificent and colossal in size. The place once a normal open ground is now highly secured and covered area thanks to the 26/11 attacks. Still a nice place to spend your evening with your family and friends. The only negative - you go at anytime and you will always find a huge crowd there. at peak times, its even difficult to put a step forward. Super challenging if your are travelling with a toddler.
  • Visited Gateway of India, Mumbai number of times. A very good place to hang around with family and friends. Located just opposite Taj Hotel. Lot of eating options around. Always remain crowded. One can see lot of doves around.

Where to stay in Mumbai

In a cramped city like Mumbai, finding a budget hotel can present a serious challenge. Many business travelers and tourists choose to stay in South Mumbai, the oldest and richest neighborhood in the city. Accommodations here put you close to most top museums, restaurants, bars, art galleries, and shops. Proximity to major attractions comes at a premium price, though--not surprising for one of the most expensive cities in Asia. If you plan to visit on a tight budget, look for options near railway stations, but prepare for low-grade rooms and few or no amenities.
