Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica, Kochi (Cochin)

4.2
Visit one of the eight basilicas in India at Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica, a church many hail as one of the best in the country. Although the Gothic-style church was originally built in 1558, the British destroyed it, before it was rebuilt again the the 19th century. Behind the plain white exterior, you can expect to find pastel colors and columns painted with frescoes and murals once you step inside. Look up and you'll see the ceiling paintings depicting scenes from the crucifixion of Christ. If you prefer to participate than admire, join in one of the church's regular services. • It is one of the 8 basilicas in the state. It's a fine piece of architecture built in mid 1500's by the Portuguese. It's ceiling is made of wood and has beautiful paintings on it which is very to find. A place one must visit in Fort Cochin, Kerala. Caretaker, Mr Vincent, is a humble gentleman to show you around.
  • Built originally by the Portuguese in 1558, later demolished by British, renewed in 1887, was proclaimed Basilica by the Pope John Paul II in 1984. First oldest diocese in Kerala. Magnificent interior. For praying & meditation.
  • It's a extravagant piece of Portuguese architectural beauty built on 1550's and renovated on 1880's. In later 90's, church proclaimed as basilica by Pope John Paul II. It is in Fort Kochi and near to St Francis Church (5min walk) and to Fort Kochi Beach. Travellers can easily reach there by boat or by bus from City Centre. Near to basilica , there is street way named Basion Road. Travellers can purchase antiques, Spices, Clothes and lot from there. Also a lot of cottages /restaurants are available on there. Interior of basilica were made full of wood and we can see beautiful paintings in the roof.
  • Beautiful Architecture. Best time is go on weekday post 9AM. Very scenics.
  • A must see, for those who are interested in Churches and architecture. The spires, the paintings on the ceiling and the ambience are worth a visit.
