Kerala Backwaters, Kerala

4.2
#1 of 118 in Nature in Kerala
Water Body Wildlife Area
Kerala Backwaters, a crisscrossing network of coastal waterways navigable by boat, provide one of the region's most efficient transportation options and tourist attractions. More than 900 km (560 mi) of lagoons, canals, lakes, and estuaries make up the network, and draw visitors from around the world looking to glide lazily under palm trees and past traditional villages on a houseboat. Explore this massive network of water-routes by renting a boat, as this makes for the easiest mode of transport and allows you to get an up-close glimpse of a region nearly frozen in time. Use our Alappuzha itinerary maker to add Kerala Backwaters and other attractions to your Alappuzha vacation plans.

  • This is one of the best part of Alleppy, rather Kerala. We went in July, in complete rainy season but got a sunny day doing boat ride in Backwaters. There are two options, you can either stay in a hou...  more »

  • Had a great memory at this place. We 5members taken a boat for 12000 (incl food, 2 rooms) for whole night. Started at 12 afternoon and completes at 9AM. Nice environment around. Non veg and veg food will serves.
  • Had an unforgettable lifetime experience, we had hired a houseboat to cruise in the backwaters of alleppey, and it was for one day, we cruised from 11 am to 9 am the next day, with all three meals, prepared as per our wish, by the houseboat chef, and the captain of the houseboat was a very soft spoken man, who explained in details about life in the backwaters. He even allowed me to be at the helm of the houseboat and I learnt how to navigate the boat from him, and that became the biggest icing on the cake for me, so to speak, of my fantastic Kerala holidays, " God's very own country".
  • No less than 5 star. Real heaven on earth. Beauty at its best. Sunrise and the morning breeze, the waters and a ride on ferry, the best a person get from nature. Early mornings and the evenings are beautiful.
  • The Backwaters of Kerala are essentially a group of 5 lagoons that are linked by natural and manmade canals. These waterways were mainly used for trade during the older times and are known for their scenic beauty and a rich variety of flora, fauna, avi-fauna and marine life.
  • Really wonderful scenic marvel. The cool breeze when riding a shikara over the lake makes the ride more pleasent.

Where to stay in Alappuzha

The accommodations of Alappuzha vary greatly in style, with the beach, main urban area, and waterways splitting the focus of the city. The area between Alappuzha Beach and Finishing Point contains the highest concentration of accommodations here, with hotels offering sea views and large resorts by the coast, a number of upmarket hotels and simple guesthouses by Finishing Point, and an array of largely standard hotels in the urban area between these two scenic spots. Many visitors to Alappuzha opt to stay on a houseboat for all or part of their visit, with the accommodations taking a range of different routes through the backwaters.
