A World Heritage Site, Elephanta Caves exposes the cave system named after a colossal elephant which was unearthed nearby. Located on island hills 7 km (4.3 mi) from the shore of mainland, the entire network consists of seven sculpted caves which date to the 5th and 8th centuries and feature sculptures, shrines, and a colossal bust of the three forms of Siva (Mahesa-murti). As you roam its natural halls, notice that the larger group of five caves have Hindu features dedicated to Lord Shiva, where other two contain rock-cut formations indicative of Buddhist craftsmanship. • To reach Elephanta Island, you will get ferry from Gateway of India, don't miss this beacuse ferry ride is an amazing experience.  more »
  • Beautiful location but be prepared to walk - wear comfortable shoes. You can buy your ticket for the ferry at the Gateway to India for 200 rupees for “fancy boat” though I couldn’t tell the difference...  more »
  • Nice place to visit. Be careful from the hungry cows and monkeys on the island. The caves are beautiful, try to arrive in the early morning to avoid crowds.  more »

  • About a one-hour ride from Gateway of India Port by ferry. Go to the ticket counter and buy a ticket for the ferry only. In 2018 the price is Rs. 200 for the ferry ( luxury class) - don't expect much from the luxury class. After arrival you can take a trolley train, or walk (my recommendation) about 15 minutes to the main entrance. Plan to be offered guides - price will depend on your ability to negotiable Rs 600 to Rs 2000. For you non Indians, plan to pay Rs. 500. go ahead and pay it, although the locals will pay only Rs. 30 ( surprise them, and pay more- this is something that they are not used to, as everyone tries to rip them off). I am sure they need the money to maintain the place. Next, Plant to climb uphill on steps while many shop owners promote their merchandise. if you are not used to climbing steps, this will take you quite a while. Take your time to look at the details all around you, there are five caves to explore. Plan your return according to the boat schedule. Monkeys everywhere, avoid where monkeys and dogs are in a common area.
  • Place has historical value though the upkeep and preservation efforts are not up to mark. Beautiful sculptures are in a dilapidated state. Historical monuments are to be treated with utmost respect. Cave 1 has the major significance out of all caves. It’s a UNESCO world heritage site and collection of cave temples predominantly dedicated to Lord Shiva.
  • A historical place where sculptures are carved from the rock of caves itself. The idol of TRIMURTI is magnificent in the meaning of face detection where one can see the face of anger, peace and nervous. Main cave is marvelous, but others are ordinary as money required to build this is not sufficient to the declining empire of the cave maker kings. Boat Ferry service is available to reach this place from gateway of India, it's amazing ride of @ 40minutes in the Arabian sea. A must visit place for the history of India in the sense of art and sculptures. If it helped you, Please like it.
  • Excellent Heritage place, must visit once. Please carry cash before going there as no ATM here & also card payment is also at very limited place. Only way to go there is by sea only, toy train ride is very short but enjoyable. Be aware of MONKEYS, don't try to entertain them in any way, they will attack you if you have food items in your hand. Carving of all the statues is excellent, do your
  • The sea route to the island is beautiful...The caves are approachable by stairs. The climb is easy since the stairs to the caves are sheltered and have loads of cool shops. The caves are like forgotten treasure(Splly for culture and history geeks!) There is a well maintained toilet as well. But beware of the monkeys around the caves.Keep all food items inside a backpack since they tend to attack tourist in search of food.In the end..Kindly do not litter while visiting the place!
