Taj Mahal, Agra

4.7
#1 of 11,611 in Things to do in India
One of the most iconic sites on the planet, Taj Mahal stands as an enduring and remarkable example of Islamic architecture in the country--it's also a World Heritage Site. Constructed between 1632 and 1653 by Emperor Shah Jahan, the mausoleum pays tribute to his beloved wife. Visit the expansive complex on the banks of the river and marvel at the 73 m (240 ft) tall structure and its surrounding minarets, covered in distinctive white marble. Explore the grounds and take in the view of the world-renowned structure, complete with a bulbous dome, from multiple angles. Note the Islamic calligraphy, colorful lattice works, raised motifs, and tiles adorning the exterior of the building. Afterwards, step under the main dome to see a vaulted ceiling above the intricately carved tombs of the Shah and his wife. Wonder in the world created in India by a loving husband in sweet memory his late wife Mumtaz. It is an eternal symbol of never ending love all over world. People come to India just to have a glimpse of this marvelous structure made out of impeccable white marble. Emperor himself was confined to see only through a peephole small image of this wonder when his son imprisoned him. My first chance in person was breathtaking and still me found this quite fascinating. With moonlight it is a bliss. And couple of very good five stars hotels around to stay and eat. What more you want from life :))

    Symbol Of Love...The name Taj Mahal , translates to the ‘ Crown Palace’ and is one of the most famous and marvelous buildings in India. Located in the city of Agra , Taj Mahal is actually a mausoleum built to house the remains of Mumtaz Mahal, the wife of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. The building is known for its extensive use of white marble and was completed in the mid-17th century.

Its the Taj Mahal ! Nuff Said. For first timers - get a good guide! very informative. And don't be stingy about giving tips and paying the people! Visit through the south gate for quickest entry and least walking around. Don't forget shades and a cap!! it gets pretty hot if you visit after 9 am.

It was amazing to see such a sheer beauty in pure white. Part of our Delhi plan to visit the Taj, and we felt so happy and excited, since we thought we would not be able to enter the complex in the first place. So much crowd, so much security etc, but we were very lucky since the driver who came with us, knew a registered guide who took us through another gate. Within no time we were inside the complex. The guide was good, he was able to tell us the history, show us the places and also teach a bit or two about photography. ha ha ha. Some call it a beauty, some call it a monument, some call it a graveyard. Whatever it may be it was simply wonderful to see it in real life than photographs and videos. Definitely a must visit place. Tip: Try to visit early morning or late afternoon, since the hot sun was making it even to look due to such high reflection from the marble. Would suggest early morning, since it would be good for photography, if you are interested though.

Where to stay in Agra

Agra offers a broad selection of budget and mid-range hotels, many within easy striking distance of the Taj Mahal, the main reason to visit the city. The area just south of Taj offers arguably the least expensive accommodations, while the streets splitting off from Fatehabad Road boast a high concentration of mid-range hotels. Keep in mind that free Wi-Fi remains unavailable even in most of Agra's nicest hotels--expect additional (and possibly steep) fees for limited Internet access.
