Samaria Gorge National Park, Sfakia

4.4
#1 of 16 in Nature in Chania Prefecture
Featuring a dramatic feature of Crete's landscape, Samaria Gorge National Park serves as a major tourist attraction and a protected biosphere reserve, famous for sheltering the extremely rare kri-kri goats. Each year nearly 200,000 people walk through the national park's famous gorge, which starts at an altitude of 1,250 m (4,100 ft) and ends on the shores of the Libyan Sea. To avoid the worst of the crowds, start your hike as early in the day as you can. You cannot camp overnight in the gorge, so you must complete the 16 km (9 mi) hike in a single day. To discover the gorge in the company of other hikers, join a guided excursion through the park. Put Samaria Gorge National Park at the forefront of your travel plans using our Sfakia trip builder .

  • The Samaria Gorge. From the plateau of Omalos a rocky serpentine road up to the ruins of the historic village of Samaria, and continues through the fascinating gates of which the narrowest only a few metres wide but hundreds is high by and then by the relentless Sun the last two kilometers to the coastal village of Agia Roumeli, which is accessible only by foot or boat. The nature is impressive, but the hike is also exhausting. I went through for the first time in the 80's with about 10 years ago, the last time it was 2007 with 32. Overall probably 4 or 5 times - and each time I find it tiring. Who makes holidays in West Crete, should consider in any case once to take this tour. Just enough water and footwear is important tighten. I mean already walking shoes, sneakers are not recommended for the joints as a result of the many stones grad. And really if you look around, especially on the descent, since many stones are not fixed and it is extremely easily represents. But it's worth. Oh yes, finally the advice to all those who can do it: is take off, that ye before the midday heat in Agia Roumeli. Just as one at the end really by the strong sunlight before eyes southward without shadows that last line needs to travel.

  • I came back to this wonderful place after about 18 years. At that time it was an oasis of peace and the beach at the end. Now the landscape remained great, but people are so much that it seems to get over the country! The 4 beach houses have become a conglomeration of restaurants and bars, and the boat that brought back home became a ferry. However remains always a beautiful hike. If you are very fit can make it uphill or even in two ways, otherwise is more than adequate discenderla. Not sottovalutetene though the length, because even if you take it down, it could become heavy for those not trained.
