Meteora, roughly translated as "suspended in the air," serves as one of the largest and historically most significant Eastern Orthodox monastery complexes in Greece, inscribed on the World Heritage List. The complex consists of a group of monasteries reachable only by narrow staircases painstakingly cut into steep sandstone cliffs. Orthodox monks settled in this region in the 11th century, originally building 24 monasteries, six of which remain intact. Each monastery possesses an important collection of precious sacred manuscripts and medieval frescoes, representing some of the finest examples of post-Byzantine painting. Wear shoes suitable for rugged terrain. Also take note to wear clothing that covers your knees and shoulders when entering the monasteries. • This is a great place! If you have arrived on mainland Greece, Meteora is one of the major sites and attractions of the country, which is well worth a visit. Despite the long journey (about 5:00 by train in 1 direction), all pays off with a vengeance, from the moment when you're the tablecloths to the long-awaited stations. So many emotions I haven't experienced before. Amazing temples located on the rocks as the storks ' nests. Exceptional there everything from landscape to architecture. Was there only a few hours (a little), but you need to select at least 2 days to explore the major monuments, photo sessions and exploring the beautiful and fabulous places. This is a must see at least 1 time in my life. I am sure that you will not regret!

  • The monasteries built on the shelves of rock do electrifying. Beautiful views, a handle to the monasteries of the long staircase. A must-see in this part of Greece.

  • Amazing and out of this world landscape with an interesting story. The impenetrable monasteries are perched proudly on the rocks from a distance. The historical way to the top was to get hoisted up a rope and a net. The modern way is to hike up steep steps which reveals amazing views. The monasteries are beautiful and well kept.
  • The Meteora Monasteries are really out of this world. They stand on weird rock pillars but once you have climbed the steps to the monastery then you are in a most holy and quiet place. The views are spectacular and the price is only €3 per person. No restaurants are available so take drinks with you especially on a hot day. The Monasteries are difficult to reach for persons with mobility impairment. Try to go after 12 so as to avoid the coach tourists. Check website as each monastery is closed at least on one weekday. Enjoy the experience. Really worth a visit.
  • Should be listed as one of the true wonders of the World. First, the view. It's really difficult (if not impossible) to describe the sweeping beauty of the centuries old monasteries built on the top of rocks framed by surrounding mountains and small villages. Then the monasteries themselves. Some of them are not very easy to visit (although it's not as difficult as you might think based on clever pictures), some of them are just a few easy steps from the parking lots. Extremely well maintained, amazing interior, the best samples of the Greek Church. People around here are not exactly very friendly. They keep a certain distance mostly because of the huge number of visitors. Guides are very knowledgeable.
  • Extraordinary piece of nature. Well worth a visit. We stayed in Kalampaka for 1 night. We took the bus to the top and walked back down. We visited one monastery which did the trick for us. On our walk we passed by different great viewpoints. After a while, you can take the monk's path down back to Kalabaka. About a 30' walk through nature with views from below this time.
  • A must visit place. Unique landscape and true treasure of heritage. A history of survival that motivates and makes you reflect how to take courage and protect whats is dear to the end.
