Fortress Spinalonga, Elounda

4.4
#1 of 295 in Nature in Greece
Fortress Spinalonga sits as a rocky islet floating in the blue waters of the Gulf of Elounda. The region's 16th century Venetian rulers carved this rock out of Crete's coastline and then built a fortress on it to protect the gulf from hostile ships. The old fortress, apparently as impregnable to the passage of time as it once was to would-be invaders, still dominates the islet and attracts nearly 30,000 annual visitors. Split your time on the little island between the Venetian fort and one of several beaches, which are lapped by shallow, calm waters. There are no tourist facilities here, so bring your own food and water. • This is a place to think about should be designed specifically for our young people. Today, where we can electronically clear everything from your sofa, this place only all too clearly shows how small we are. Respect, decency and especially Demut...das are things that are too often lost.

  • For a very small island there is a lot to see. Would recommend following the tour guides to find out the history on first visit. Needs multiple visits too see everything.  more »
  • This Venetian fortress island which in 1903 was the accumulation place for lepers until 1957. Gripping story about this compilation place that is also described in the novel to Victoria Hislop "island". Too bad that one not allowed to hope in the land on the island.

  • A great and informative day out. Find out all about the history of the fortress and explore it for your self. The guided tour is very detailed and reveals much of the history behind the fortress. Couldn't recommend highly enough!
  • You can recommend visiting the island to everyone. There is and where to take a walk and what to see and somewhere to climb and feel the architecture of that time. The buildings are very well preserved, the island really looks like an impregnable fortress with a large variety of buildings. On the territory there is a museum and a souvenir shop with interesting gizmos (there you can also get an informative guide to the island). The special coloring adds to the island its heavy history. If you come by day, it will be very hot, and on the top it's also windy (you can easily get a strong tan). The view from the highest point of the island is unforgettable! For comfortable walks and a full study of the island it is worth laying at least 2 hours, taking water and something to eat. To connect the island with the mainland there is regular sea communication (boats), very quickly (10 minutes) and cheap to get from the port of Plaka Marina.
  • Awesome place. Amazing history lesson. 😍
  • Go with a guide. Be aware a boat ticket out doesn't actually get you in once you get there. There is very limited toilet facilities so when it's busy be prepared to queue. If you arrive the same time as a big tourist boat the queue for tickets is long with nowhere to stand in the shade. Take your own water and snacks.
  • You need a great guide to tell you the real story. We were lucky. Grumpy people selling tickets it then I wouldn't want the be stuck in a small shed all day dealing with tourists. Good concession for senior citizens.
