Ancient Agora of Athens, Athens

4.6
The commercial, political, and religious center of ancient Athens, Ancient Agora of Athens offers you a chance to gain insight into the origins of democracy. Founded in the 6th century BCE, this large open area stood in the middle of the city and served as a meeting place used to enact laws, make decisions about the city's defense, and hold public forums to discuss ostracism, the expulsion of a citizen for a period of ten years. Visit this archeological site to see two of ancient Athens' major landmarks, a temple dedicated to the god Hephaestus and a two-story covered walkway, reconstructed in the 1950s to house a museum of ancient clay, bronze, and glass objects. • This place is a history wonderland. You can feel the history all around you. There is not much remaining of the structures that once stood, only a few ruins here and there, save for a few structures that still stand. But the site is interpreted wonderfully! There is also a museum in a building that was built to replicate a building that once stood in the Agora. I recommend having an audio guide of some sort, or just using a guidebook, to get a more descriptive and informative experience. A must-see in Athens!
  • Beautiful mixed feeling place. Great for families and budget friendly. Great views of the town and acropolis. A full day need to explore each landmark. The maps given at the entrance appears not to be so elaborate in directions and if you are not so good with directions as I am, you end up seeing only 3 or so attractions prior to leaving. Serene though.
  • Mind blowing how much history had taken place here. The scale of the complex was also astonishing. The nearly complete temple was a real treat to see. Most of the Agora is accessible for those of limited mobility though the ground occasionally is rough. The reconstructed building in exact replication is cool. In it are many pottery and statues artifacts found on the site.
  • Beautiful place to visit with a lot too see. One of the buildings has been converted to a museum where you can see restored statues and found relics of different periods. Entrance is free for students and others can buy a combination ticket for the entire area for one price ( at time of review this is 30€ )
  • An amazing historical experience. Strongly suggest hiring a guide with expertise to explain everything. And go early. It gets very busy especially during school days (school trips) or on holidays and weekends. Wear good shoes. I don't think sandals are advisable. Stones are slippery and uneven terrain.
