Ancient Agora of Athens, Athens

4.6
The commercial, political, and religious center of ancient Athens, Ancient Agora of Athens offers you a chance to gain insight into the origins of democracy. Founded in the 6th century BCE, this large open area stood in the middle of the city and served as a meeting place used to enact laws, make decisions about the city's defense, and hold public forums to discuss ostracism, the expulsion of a citizen for a period of ten years. Visit this archeological site to see two of ancient Athens' major landmarks, a temple dedicated to the god Hephaestus and a two-story covered walkway, reconstructed in the 1950s to house a museum of ancient clay, bronze, and glass objects. • There are a number of places to visit in this area such as the Stoa of Attalos and its museum and the Temple of Hephaestus. When done with the walk you can relax at one of the many cafes in the surrou...  more »

  • Beautiful mixed feeling place. Great for families and budget friendly. Great views if the town and acropolis. A full day need to explore each landmark. The maps given at the entrance appears not to be so elaborate in directions and if you are not so good with directions as I am, you end up doing 3 or things and out. Serene though.
  • One important thing to note - it closes at the surprisingly early time of 3pm, and in reality a team of whistle blowing attendants will here you out if the area from about 2:45! Plan accordingly to make sure you have enough time! Incredible to explore and imagine what it must have been like when it was the centre of the civilized world. The museum in the reconstructed area has some excellent exhibits such as a voting machine and ostracism tablets. Well worth checking out.
  • Just awesome. One of the most amazing places in greece. Its a very organized place and if you go there you will pick beautiful pictures. If you ask me, go soon but stay there until the sunset and enjoy that amazing view. Bring water with you, or at least a bottle, it is really hot in there, but you can find some fountains with safe drinking water on site. Enjoy
  • Exciting to see a whole town laid out between the two well preserved ancient buildings. Just the basements mostly, still gives a good idea of how it used to be more than two thousand years ago. And very picturesque too.
  • A must place to see if you are interested in experiencing life in the centre of the city in ancient Greece. It is the best known example of an ancient market (agora). It was the heart of Athens where trade was happening but also the cultural and religious centre. The main court of justice was there too. You can enter the ancient market to see the everyday trade products or visit the very well preserved temple of Ifaistos. It shares the same ticket with a visit to acropolis and you can revisit during a two days period.
