Acropolis Museum, Athens

4.7
#1 of 6,793 in Things to do in Greece
Established to preserve the rich heritage of ancient Greece, Acropolis Museum brings together thousands of artifacts found at the world-famous ancient citadel located on a rocky outcrop above Athens. Opened in 2009 just a short walk from this heritage-listed archaeological site, the museum exhibits nearly 4,000 objects, including items formerly held in storage or displayed by foreign museums. The collection focuses on statues from the 5th century BCE, widely regarded as the finest examples of ancient artistic achievement. The museum building, a major tourist attraction in itself, features exhibit spaces designed to give each artifact a clear historical context. Finish your visit at the second-floor restaurant, which offers panoramic views of the city's historical hills. • Parts of the exhibition are the arkeologiskeudgravning the building itself has created so remember to look down both outside and inside the musseet. There are Photo ban and the guards are very zealous about it. even with mobile without Flash it's hard without currently shouted out loud. be there in good time which will be closed so everyone is out 16.00 sharp.

  • There is little to add to the various recensionipertamto do any suggestions: 1 take advantage of the early morning hours to visit the Acropolis as the heat is looming, and then devoted himself to the Museum 2 you don't need a reservation because the row flows (groups and recently booked come instantly 3 interesting (although a bit pricey) restaurant with a beautiful terrace overlooking the Acropolis. The Museum is sublime

  • This museum is well-organized and has a lot of very interesting material. I recommend the Acropolis first, then the museum.  more »

  • A beautifully laid out museum that shows a ton of old Greek sculptures and statues. On the bottom floor it is mainly old pots and other clay items, then you moving into the tools they use. Once you get higher up you see the sculptures and statues. On the top floor they have actual sized room of the Parthenon with the remaining pieces display as they would have been seen on the old structure. It is quite amazing and fun to walk around getting a feel for the true size and the story that the old plates told.
  • Fantastic museum full of light and space. Statues and artefacts beautifully presented with plenty of information in both Greek and English. An interesting display on the ground floor showing how the treasures of the Parthenon and other nearby buildings were excavated and moved to the museum. Good view of the Parthenon from the huge windows on the top floor. If you're over 65 and a member of the EU (make the most of the time left) you get half-price entry so have some ID with you.
  • Absolutely beautiful building. Well laid out, has great explanations of everything in English and Greek. No pictures allowed inside, with a few exceptions. Be sure to look down when you get inside as you can see an archaeological dig occurring beneath you. Great way to end a trip to the Acropolis. Compared to the National Archaeological Museum, there are fewer artifacts, but they are much more accessible and the building itself is much nicer, feels less crowded, and is in a more accessible location if you're staying near the city center.
  • This was nice to visit after visiting the Acropolis, because a lot of the original pieces of the Acropolis are here. Keep in mind some are replicated because they are in other museums. Parts you can take pictures other parts you can’t. There are several floors a cafe, bookstore and bathrooms on every floor! I had a tour which in my opinion is a must do. Wear sneakers as there is a lot of walking especially if you do the Acropolis the same day!
  • If you are Athens, this is a must visit. It gives you a better understanding of what the acropolis was and how it evolved. The exhibits are great and explain each of the monuments and what the temples and gods were about. We also noticed that this was much less crowded than the acropolis and had significantly more information there. On the second floor there are some stores and cafe with an outside terrace with the acropolis view. The tickets were very reasonable as well. Only costed 5euro.
