Amphitheatre de Pula, Pula

4.5
Sit on the stone tiers of Amphitheatre de Pula, and imagine how gladiators fought wild animals and each other in the central area. The arena was built in the 1st century CE during the reign of Emperor Vespasian, at the same time as the Roman Colosseum. Walk the underground passages, once used by the gladiators, and see the exhibition of age-old viticulture and olive growing in Istria. Check out the reconstructions of ancient mills and presses, and amphorae used for storing olive oil and wine. The venue was also a site of knights' tournaments and fairs in the Middle Ages. Today it hosts summer performances--a film festival, an equestrian festival, operas, and concerts. Make Amphitheatre de Pula a part of your Pula vacation plans using our Pula trip planner .

  • We went to Pula for the holidays! In order not to ruin the city's surprise, I did not look for any information about the city. This decision was perfect, full of surprises and masterpieces. This is one of those. I recommend doing this to you too. Highly recommended.
  • Well maintained structure. Surprised that it's still standing after 2000 yrs. Right in the middle of the city has enough parking spaces behind the Arena and also in the front. Walkable distance from most of the other attractions in Pula. Worth the visit...
  • While not as grand as the Roman Colosseum, this is still a sight to behold and a true testament to the building prowess of the ancient Romans. The arena is large and the whole outer wall is intact with the original stonework. The seating area was rebuilt to give you scale. Furthermore, the area is not only a bygone venue, but a contemporary one as well and fully prepared to host practically any style of live performance.
  • This is very interesting historical venue, the object is very interesting on the one side but horrifying on the other side. There is not much more presented than the stones. Exhibition is small, no interpretation. Lack of maintenance is so evident. There is no access for disabled persons.
  • Great place for pictures. You can go around and see the insides without entering. Located next to center.
